Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • What does Extinction Rebellion (XR) want?

These are the top-line demands of Extinction Rebellion Ireland:

  • 1. TELL THE TRUTH

The Irish government and media must adequately inform the public of the climate and biodiversity emergency and communicate the urgency for change and the consequences of not doing so.

  • 2. ACT LIKE IT’S AN EMERGENCY

The Irish government must act to immediately halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2030, while reversing all policies not in alignment with that position.

  • 3. ENSURE A JUST TRANSITION

All policy changes must be in keeping with the idea of a just transition, where the most vulnerable are not expected to sacrifice the most. This just transition must be made within a global context and ensure that profits are not placed before our planet.

  • Why doesn’t Extinction Rebellion offer solutions?

Proposing detailed solutions quickly leads to disagreements that would distract from the urgency of the cause.

  • Why are XR activists being arrested?

The approach followed by XR is non-violent civil disobedience, which can lead to arrest for people who put themselves forward to be arrestable.

  • Do I need to get arrested?

No. There are many roles we need people for that involve no risk of arrest.

Rebellion Week 2

  • What is Rebellion Week 2?

It’s a whole week of civil disobedience in Dublin to put pressure on the Government to take seriously the climate crisis and mass extinction.

  • Why is it happening in Dublin?

We see this mass demonstration in the capital to be the most effective way to put pressure on the Government to make real change.
